The greedy Woodcutter Story. There lived a woodcutter named Uttamlal in Vohanpur village. To earn his living, he used to collect wood every day from the forest near the village and earn some money by selling it. By this  he was making his living.

After a few days, Uttamlal got married. His wife was a big spender. So now it was difficult to run the household by selling that  wood. On top of that, Uttamlal’s wife repeatedly asked money from Uttamlal, sometimes to buy new clothes and sometimes for other things. If she didn’t get the money, she would get upset.

 

Uttamlal loved his wife very much, so he could not tolerate her anger. Uttamlal decided that he will now collect more wood and sell it, so that his wife does not face shortage of money every day.

 

To fulfill his wife’s wish, today Uttamlal went to the dense forest and collected a lot of wood and sold it in the market. When he got more money for more wood, Uttamlal became happy and gave all the money to his wife. Now Uttamlal started doing the same every day.

Within no time, his greed increased so that he started cutting trees. By cutting trees, more wood was obtained and he started getting higher prices. The woodcutter would cut a tree every week and fulfill wife’s needs with the money he earned from selling the wood. Now more money was coming in, so the house was also running well.

Gradually Uttamlal started investing his money in gambling. He became so addicted to gambling that Uttamlal lost a huge amount of money in it. Now to repay this amount, Uttamlal decided to cut one or two thick trees.

As soon as Uttamlal went into the forest and tried to use his ax on a big tree, he was attacked by a branch of the tree. Uttamlal was shocked. Then a branch of a tree wrapped him around him.

Uttamlal could not understand what was happening. Just then a voice came from the tree. “Fool, you are biting me because of your greed. You spend all the money on gambling and then come to cut trees to return the money.”

“You know how valuable trees are. Life resides within us too and we provide you humans with air to live, shade in the sun, and fruits to satisfy hunger. But, you are cutting us for your selfishness.” The tree said, “Today you wait, I will use this ax on you now.”

The branch of the tree was about to attack Uttamlal with the axe, when he started pleading. He request to parden him and said, “I have made mistake, but give me chance to improve. If you kill me, what will happen to my wife? She will be left alone. From today onwards I take a vow that I will not cut any tree.”

Hearing all this, the tree felt pity on Uttamlal. He left Uttamlal. As soon as he was released, Uttamlal ran to his home and resolved not to be lured by money.

lesson from the story

One should not play with the environment out of greed. We get oxygen only from trees. By cutting trees, we bring trouble into our own lives.
